The Job Interview (from hell)

Posted on May 27, 2024May 26, 2025 by Paul

I was the CMO of a restaurant group with multiple locations and millions in sales... and it was growing ...

Then I became the CCO of a boutique marketing firm serving over 150 customers and clients.

There was an upstart rival firm that was "hot" and wanted to recruit me, so with permission, I went to meet with them. Better money, better hours.

Know what happened?

The lady, and I kid you not, started asking in the "interview" who we were working with ... it was a firm troll.

A vulture interview.

Of course realizing what it was all about, I gave her nothing and left.

But it did leave me with something ... a lasting memory of how despicable the people in the marketing space can be.

My resume of building things and helping create multimillion dollar businesses was much better than hers (despite not having a degree), so she spent a lot of time talking about her achievements and how she's built all she had on her own and how she was a one woman wrecking crew.

So I asked, "What happens if you wreck? Literally get in a car accident and can't continue. Do you have a succession plan for the business?"

She had around 23 or so people working there ... she went NUTS at that question!

Because it was all about her and she built it and these other people's lives meant nothing to her.

Cause she worked hard.

Seriously.

After a few years, they were never heard from again. And I don't even recall what it was named. Or who the lady was.

Don't be a trash person.

Some open doors aren't a good fit for the opportunity. Sure, more money and better work hours could have worked out nicely, but in this case, there was no way it would.

Welcome to Open Doors and Opportunity!

My name is Paul and I’m the owner of this blog.

The picture of me above was taken by a very famous photographer who has also photographed Presidents of the United States, numerous celebrity actors and various sports professionals, as well as other business professionals like myself.

I was supposed to have a feature article written about what a great marketing professional I was in GQ Magazine, or Fortune Magazine, or Forbes, or Playboy … one of those … but then, things went sideways.

    Really sideways.

The article was never written, the photo was never used anywhere, I was fired from the job that made that photo possible, I lost my home and ended up traveling all over in my pick-up truck (known as Unit #4)  and staying in various Wal-Mart parking lots (what I like to call the Wal-Mart Condo Association) for 2 years.

In the meantime, I’ve done everything. I’ve been a partner in the largest nightclub in SWFL, written songs with Grammy Winners in the Songwriter Hall of Fame, started as a public relations grunt and worked my way to Chief Marketing Officer of a restaurant group, and much, much, much more and many things.

It’s been a crazy life – with highs and lows not experienced by anyone who ever “played it safe” — but I was born to live, and so, that’s what’s I’ve done. These are just some of those (all true 100%) stories.
