Robert Reynolds (former bass player for the Grammy winning group The Mavericks) taught me how to hail a cab.
We were in Nashville and had been together in the studio all day.
At that time he was married to Trisha Yearwood (now the wife of Garth Brooks - the largest selling artist of all time) and I was trying to pitch a song I had written for her, to her.
I ended up leaving the studio a little early and so Robert and I met some time later at a bar across town. Our first stop.
Our last stop was hours later - at another bar somewhere on the other side of town.
It was a long night and I wasn't about to drive home at that point. So, Robert being Robert cavalierly said, "I can get us a cab".
I can remember him walking out in the middle of the street, 2 am or so, and taking two fingers and shaking them real fast downward.
Snap. Snap.
As if to say, "come here".
It worked.
And I laughed and laughed and laughed.
That was probably the most funny thing that happened all night.
It looked ridiculous.
But it worked.
I thought about that just now because I remembered a few weeks ago leaving my former night club and needing a cab.
I remember stumbling to the street.
I remember not seeing anyone around but me.
I remember using Robert's special dog whistling cab calling technique.
Then I remember paying the cab driver.
I was home.

Stupid things that work.
That's what my mind is on right now.
Open Doors and Opportunity.
- An AC to electric converter for your truck gets you a shave.
- A .68 cent gallon of Walmart water gets your hair washed. Plus you have drinking water for a day or so.
- .18-.23 cents gets you a banana if you have nothing else to eat (and sometimes, you don't).
Thank the Lord for stupid things that work.
Open Doors and Opportunity.
- The guy at 7-11 who gives you the Super Big Gulp cup of ice for free.
Open Doors and Opportunity.
- The person who pays your bills for the month - putting faith into action by using their own money to help you.
Open Doors and Opportunity.
- The two finger snap that gets you a cab when you've had too much to drink and need a ride home.
Open Doors and Opportunity.
Stupid things that provide a huge return.
Value for nothing.
All of those things.
See if you can spot how many times in a day you can find them.
I bet you will be surprised.
I bet you didn't even know how many times you experienced Open Doors and Opportunity in your life.
I bet it will amaze you.

On another note, we cross bridges when we come to them.
One never knows when an emergency might arise.
Even today I saw an accident.
Someone crossed some line - one ended up head first at what had to be over 50 mph in a concrete light pole.
Their SUV looked like it'd been through a war zone.
There was debris everywhere.
The Camero or Mustang couldn't have been much better.
Tore apart.
I don't suppose either of those drivers, or passengers, thought to themselves this morning, "today I will be in a wreck that may take my life and change the entire trajectory of my life."
A good friend just lost a niece in the same way.
My heart breaks for her and the family.

Life is not guaranteed.
Safety isn't either.
That's why it's important to, as best you can, recognize Open Doors and Opportunity moments.
You're not guaranteed one more second here.
My friend - her niece - she was asleep at the time of the accident. A passenger.
Slammed from behind by another someone, her husband lost control and it sent him into oncoming traffic.
They were hit by another car and she was thrown from the car she was riding in.
Then ran over.
She may have never woke up before leaving this world and entering Heaven.
Tragic, tragic.
Everyone's life completely changed in the blink of an eye.
A bridge no one wants to cross.
--
It's not easy to keep your chin up. I'm a professional at saying, "keep your chin up, good things are coming."
And, "God is good." (Which He is)
But when you come to a bridge that is hard to cross - then what?
No one wants to come across those bridges - and yet, in our own way - we all cross them all the time.
Whether it's not having enough food. Enough gas. Our kids are a nightmare and we don't know what to do with them. Or whatever. Seems like there is always a bridge.
Where is the Open Doors and Opportunity in all of that?
You have to consider:
You have a good life.
You're really blessed.
Think about this - no matter from where you might be reading this - you have something to read it on (desktop, laptop, tablet, phone) and the internet.
Those things offer Open Doors and Opportunity.
It's everywhere.
Can you recognize it when you have it?
And if you can't, isn't it about time to start putting some things in perspective?
Life is short.
Bridges come before you know it.
Life happens.
Find moments of Open Doors and Opportunity.
They are all around and it's up to you to recognize them and be thankful for them.
The world is waiting for you.
