When I was in 2nd grade, and I can not tell you the reason, I began golf talking to myself. Whispering in my own mind ... playing commentary ... "He's about to take a test. No one knows if he can pass this test. He seems confident. He knows what's on the test. He just might pull it off."
After talking to myself like that for the entire year, the administrators approached my parents - said, "we need to move him to 4th grade"... parents said no. In 7th grade they said, "we need to move him to 9th' ... again, no. Could have graduated at 15, out of college at 18, no, no, no. It's all good! You know why?
Because I was able to say in a muted voice to myself, "He could have ...".
Circumstances.
Do You ever watch golf on the TV? You know how all those guys always talk in a muted voice. They never get excited, they never get loud and they never, ever, panic? That's me. As I say to others, "I'm like a duck on the water. My feet are going a mile a minute, but up here I'm like (hand gesture - flat across). And besides, God is good."
There are times in life when I find myself with my back against the wall. With nothing to hope for, nothing to look forward to, nothing to do ... and even if I had all of those things I couldn't figure out how to make it all come together and work in my favor. LOST.
Peanuts (the brilliant cartoon) played a huge part in this. Charlie Brown, Lucy, Linus - the gang - they are all self talkers. They say things to themselves before they say anything out loud. And life is like that in a nutshell. We ALL say things in our head before we say them out loud.
What do you think people think when they are thinking?
I say do less talking to others and do more talking to yourself. Commentary on your actions. Let me stress that, COMMENTARY ON YOUR ACTIONS AND WHAT ARE THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF THOSE ACTIONS.
"He's looking at the pin. It's 145 yards away. He ask his caddy for a 9 iron. The wind is blowing from the east at 6 miles an hour. There are some strong gust. The flag is waving steady. He thinks the 9 iron is inferior in these conditions and is switching to a 7 iron. He takes a couple of practice swings. Chokes up on the grip. Swings and it's ...."
Talking to yourself is important. People often discount the thoughts that come in their own mind, but we all have thoughts. If those thoughts are played out like a golf commentator, those thoughts then become something brilliant and tremendously helpful.
