I needed a job. I was down to $8 and a half a potato. I wrote a friend of mine, "should I eat the potato now or should I cut it in half and eat some today and some tomorrow?" He said eat the whole thing. And I did.
It wasn't supposed to be like that.
I had just spent the last 9 months living in the basement of a friend's mother's house. Before that I had spent 3 years living with my grandmother and taking care of her. I couldn't hold down a job because that was literally a 25/8 job. All the time.
Finally after all that, I'd landed a job back in southwest Florida. It was a cabling job. Installing computer networks. Something I know how to do. Decent hourly wage. Full time. Plenty of work.
I borrowed money from my friend and moved.
Within 2 months I had helped the contractor catch up on all his work. He was just behind and needed a boost. I was let go. I lost my job.
Down to $8 and a half a potato, 2 months behind on rent and about to be evicted if not for the generous landlord, I was desperate. I needed a job badly.
I saw a place on craigslist, The Redneck Yacht Club. I thought it looked interesting. They were looking for a marketing director. I was actually a marketing guy in need of a job. So I did what I always do, research.
Research is one of the best things you can learn to do. If you know how to do research and find people, you're almost golden.
I found the current girl working marketing for the club. Sent her a note, "why ya leaving? what's it like? should I be interested in this position?" She and I spoke on the phone. She put in a good word. Just a couple days later after 4 hours of interviews, I got the job.
Then I got to celebrate. God is good.
