I could have minted several. At least 10. I didn't.
That would turn out to be a mistake.
For those unaware, "apes" (Bored Apes) became a 'thing' in the NFT world and some went on to be worth millions of dollars. Gold apes in particular.
I missed out. On all of it. Kind of.
I met a guy named Franklin who was in the space and he had a gold ape. In fact, he had the most important gold ape - because he made it virtually impossible not to see it.
The ape was famous. And worth (at the time millions (with an 's')).
Then they announced that the owners of the NFT 'owned' the IP. They could do whatever they wanted with the art.
This was pretty common with other NFTs, but with the big company that created the apes, it was a big deal. IP is everything.
Franklin created a collection of NFTs based on his own gold ape.
Whether by fluke or timing, I was able to buy one later on the open market for .... about $8.
I asked Franklin what I could do with it and he said, 'whatever you want'.
I had an exact copy of his own gold ape. Well, with the exception of the one thing he changed to make the collection a little different.
I knew exactly what I wanted to with it.
By the time this all transpired I had already been writing a comic series using the other NFT/PFP IP I owned.
I wanted to introduce a new character into the series and "Antonio" was born.
PFP Daily is the name of the cartoon - and it's literally an "OG" in the NFT world. It was the first full on cartoon/comic created in the space. And it was a decent hit. People all over the world read it.
Because Antonio wore a fast food worker uniform, I made him a worker at McCatto's ... a fast food joint in my little fictional world.
It was long before I realized I needed to 'spin-off' McCatto's into it's own series.
Antonio was a strong (if not sleepy) character - and his role was easy to write.
In McCatto's Antonio's 3 cousins take over the restaurant. This meant I needed to use Antonio and create 3 more gold apes. Now I had 4.
Plus, a story that will live 1,000 years. Be seen by thousands (has been seen and read) and so on. For $8.
