My radio show was a work of sheer magic.
It was not easy.
Take that back.
It was easy for everyone involved on the air or on the radio show itself - the talent.
But NOT for the people who weren't - the business office.
They couldn't understand what I was doing.
"Why are you making the show about you? This is a commercial. This exist to promote the business!"
"Yes, but there's a right way and a wrong way to host a talk show.
I know the right way."
The reason I know the right way was because I based my show on what all of the most successful talk show host did - they made the show about themselves.
No one tunes in to Rush Limbaugh to hear his take on politics.
No.
They tune in to hear Rush talk about what Rush wants to talk about in his life.
Same with Howard Stern.
The guy says some truly perverted things.
He's had some truly perverted segments.
If you've ever seen his movie Private Parts, you know.
At the same time, he didn't make it because of those perverted segments.
If you've seen the movie, you know why he made it.
The show isn't about sex. It's about Howard.
It's about his life.
That was my show.
I'm reminded that is how I should always choose to live my life.
It's about me.
As much as it is about you.
It's just this - being authentic.
Being real.
The reason I'm reminded is because Rush just said if he had listened to all his consultants, he wouldn't be here and successful 28 years later.
Amen to that.
He listened to himself.
That's where open doors and opportunity are.
You do you.
Stop listening to what other people are telling you to do and just do what's right for you.
Do what makes you successful - or at least feel successful.
You do that and you will be successful. You will find the open doors you are looking for. You will get the opportunity you seek.
Others can get you twisted around and on the wrong path.
In the radio business - that means cancelled.
I wasn't cancelled, I was just tired of listening to those other voices (the suits) and knew I couldn't continue under those circumstances.
But prior to that, my radio show killed it.
Killed it on air.
Killed it for being funny.
Killed it for being legitimate.
Killed it for great interviews.
Killed it in the ratings.
I could go on.
Surrounded by a great cast of people - who also ardently refused to listen to any 'consultant' - there was no way it was going to fail.
Definitely a great opportunity.
Bottom line: Just be you.
